About

Where heart & lung research starts

Heart Lung Foundation was established at Green Lane Hospital on 24th June 1971 as the Green Lane Research and
Educational Fund by Sir Brian Barratt-Boyes and Dr Jim Lowe. It was incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act on
25th August 1976. The Fund is a registered charitable entity under the NZ Charities Act 2005.
Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine relocated to Auckland City Hospital in 2003. The growth
of the Fund as well as new needs led to the evolution of Heart Lung Foundation.

We support research that can change lives, positively, tomorrow and forever, and we provide medical educational
tools and resources to foster ideas and inspire outcomes. Heart Lung Foundation can only support research with your
help. Together, we can increase awareness and understanding of our society’s need for more research.

Our Values

Support

We understand our researchers
journey is tough. We listen to them,
support and mentor them the best
we can with optimism and
attention, to make their work a
success

Approachability

We put the researcher at the core
of our action. We strive to be
accessible and open, easy and
friendly to speak to so our
researchers (especially the
first-timers) feel confident to start
and conduct their research.

Simple

From application to project
coordination, we aim to keep
things easy for the researcher. We
strive to communicate in a helpful
manner, to ensure process is
smooth and we avoid any
unnecessary hurdles.

Future Focus

We care about the long term
impact and sustainability of our
projects. We help follow up with
research progress and outcomes
generated for everyone’s benefit

Our Trustees

The Foundation board is comprised of five trustees. Each trustee represents one of the five departments which are
supported by Heart Lung Foundation, formerly known as the Green Lane Research and Educational Fund.
